Fallout series birthday party!

25 years of Fallout! Let's throw a party!
What should we eat?
Let's get Iguana Bob to cater. I don't know what seasoning he adds to those kebabs, but they're delicious!

Can we go to Mom's Diner? I want brahmin fries!

I don't trust the meat you can buy out here. We can just eat pre-war preserved foods!

Wait, the Overseer is paying? Let's go to the Gourmand!

If we work in shifts, maybe we can get that preserved pie...!

If we have a bar, we need a bartender!

If you got to choose, what kind of game would Fallout 5 be? Where and when would it be set? Would it have any new kinds of gameplay?

Of the existing settings, I prefer the West Coast setting, but I don't know if I want another game in it. Maybe if it were nearby enough that you heard a little about the NCR etc. but didn't really interact with them? That's for a sequel: I'd be totally happy with prequels set anywhere in between 2077 and 2281, ideally in a corner/faction/time we haven't seen yet :)
Gameplay-wise, I'd like more options to talk your way into/out of situations, and more use out of stats.
I don't want a return of the FO4 settlements. I'd love if it were more fully featured and you could actually build/destroy more buildings, and if there were more options for automation (like, the settlers build things when you're not there and don't need you to hold their hand all the time). I guess fewer options and more automation could also work (help them build their own pre-defined settlement). I love the idea of rebuilding.
I don't want a return to turn-based combat either, not in a 3d game, but I liked the FO3/FNV system where you could do a combination mode for weak characters (pipboy + relying on companions/other npcs/god). In FO4 I feel railroaded into playing as the world's greatest marksman which is fine and fun but a bit limiting roleplay-wise. I don't really mind how that issue is tackled, though, just that it is (multiple companions could work, too, for example).
Similarly it would be amazing if there was more/better stealth gameplay. I guess that's my closest thing to a new feature idea :) Maybe it is just because I am playing Thief, hehe!

Hmmm, I feel this a little bit in New Vegas too. But that's only because I've been playing it recently. All the insects are so much tougher than I remember! XD I've been getting an itch to replay FO4 and I think I'm going to do that. I'll try and do a melee-based run and see how that plays out. You have me curious now. :D
I do like all of your other suggestions on how to make it better too!

The cazadores are soooo tough if you can't get the wings/fast enough. Scary!

I would love to see one in or around New Orleans. Give me more creepy swamp!

They could do some really fun stuff with the city, too.
I just hope it's less scary than L4D2 :)

I would love to see the quirky dialogue options that Fallout 3 had again! The kind that could end up in a hostile encounter. Or if you made your character have really low INT/CHAR it made the dialogue for all sorts of entertaining. I really loved that and wish they hadn't moved away from it. This is probably just a dream though, since they are moving towards voiced protagonists. That's why I personally never asked for that.
And maybe instead of being a Vault Dweller we could do something along the lines of a different origins story? Like the courier but different, obviously. I'm not for getting rid of Vault Dweller origins completely! I just think we could do it differently sometimes. :D It would be kind of cool to start out in a vault in the middle of the war (not like 3 but like the really scary kind of vaults they had) and you have to deal with... all those scary issues in real time. XD But that might just be a me thing, lol.
Edited to add: It would be really cool to have an origins story dealing with a faction. Like the BoS or Enclave or Followers of the Apocalypse. There is a lot of cool lore that could be played with!

I don't like the sacrifices they make for voiced protagonists either :( Actually, I feel kinda optimistic about that 'cause of Starfield and what I've seen of that game so far. :)
I guess in FO2 we're not a vault dweller but the descendant of one, and the Sole Survivor is only technically a vault dweller. But I agree! I guess they love that "opening the vault door for the first time" thing. It's iconic since FO1 and again when we get to see it in 3d in FO3, and rightfully so. But we can do that to a smaller extent if we get, idk, trapped in a vault during a quest or whatever, too. If we are a vault dweller again, I'd like it to be really for real like in FO1, which hasn't been fully explored since then. And nobody could say the totally non-vault-related opening of FNV isn't also iconic!

i'm not super worried about the setting as long as the research is good.
and i want a) more story and b) quests that send you off discovering the world. my biggest complaint about FO3 is that there are a ton of locations that the game doesn't send you to - they're just out there and if you don't just meander around the map, you never know about them. what's the point? i get that some folks like that - but that's not really part of FO.
oh - also, the arbitrary time limit that applies to part of the main quest, but then there's the bait and switch sort of set up. =)

I’m someone who likes the unnecessary areas, feels more like I’m really exploring this world. But I think they’re in FO1! I mean like half of the Boneyard is just there to explore right? And the big one is wandering into Shady Sands! I guess you could say you were slightly sent there because you were told to head in that direction?
I would hate a time limit haha. I get stressed enough in FO1 even though it’s so extended by whatever patches. :)

But, exploring the location once you get there, is ttly cool. Finding locations on your way to somewhere else, also cool. But stuff off in the rando corners that you never visit, unless it's an Easter Egg - why?
Time limit - I'd only want them for parts of the quest, not the whole game.

A time limit for parts of the game could be pretty fun! But yeah, for the whole thing it would curtail exploration... or at least leisurely/thorough exploration!

the time limits - or 'limits' - in FO1 are incorporated into the game. if you don't save The Glow before a certain point, the ghouls are all gone; and if you don't find the waterchip, you lose - unless you complete the final boss quest before the time runs out.
